Starting your own business? Here’s what you need to set up.

A lot of people dream of starting their own business, working for themselves rather than answering to a boss, setting their own work hours and making as much or as little money as they desire. However, there’s a reason not everyone does it – it’s complicated, it can be confusing and sometimes there’s no room in the marketplace for what you want to do.

But if you have a great business idea, you have the passion and you’re motivated, then it’s time to set yourself up! So what should you start with? Here’s a basic guide (from someone who’s done it all before)…

The role of social media in a balanced life

Social media is still relatively new, in historical terms, and how it affects our lives has not been researched thoroughly to date. However, I think most people can intuitively feel when their social media use is getting beyond their control, and endeavour to use social media as part of a balanced life. In business, as in life, it’s important to have balance. Here are some ideas on how to use social media in a way that enhances rather than takes away from your real life…

How to go on maternity leave when you’re a freelancer

Freelance life is the best. I may be biased, but it’s definitely enabled me to have a richer family life, a more balanced view of the future and it’s put work into perspective. I’d much rather be able to take my two year-old son to his swimming lesson at 9.30am on a Tuesday and then work for an extra hour in the evening at home, than work overtime for an employer in an office in the city. I love my clients, I love working from home, and I love social media. It’s a match made in heaven.

But what happens when life forces you to take a break?

In my case, I’m having our second baby in March, and there’s no employer paying for my maternity leave. So here’s what I’m doing…

How To Take A Digital Detox

Do you ever get that feeling at the end of the work day? Like ‘if I have to check Facebook one more time, I will explode’? But it’s almost an obsession. Maybe someone has posted something I NEED to read; I don’t want to miss out; it’s just a quick glance – how many times have you said that? Have you thought about taking a digital detox?

According to Arianna Huffington, the average smartphone user checks his or her device every six and a half minutes. That’s over 9 times per hour! I question how we can give our attention properly to anything else we’re doing, including having conversations and engaging with actual people in the real life world, when we’ve always got one eye on our phones.

Let’s be honest –¬†we all need a break. And I mean a serious break. Ok, you don’t have to quit the internet¬†for good, but a weekend might be a start. Here’s some tips on how to detox from your digital life…

How I Stay Productive

I work from home every day (often including the weekend, which I know is not healthy, but sometimes needs must!) and I can honestly say I love it. Working from home is not for everyone – some people need a boss to tell them what to do, or co-workers to throw ideas around with and chat to, and that’s a lot of fun. But here’s the thing for me: I get so much more work done when I don’t have colleagues sitting next to me. In previous roles the social element of work was fantastic, but it also eats into your actual productive work time. Here at home, the only distractions are housework and cooking. Not as exciting as a half an hour gossip session about someone else’s debauched weekend.
